Construction on the San Diego Zoo Safari Park began in 1971, and was not without speed bumps. Escondido’s desert landscape seemed tailor-made for some species, but not for all. The horticulture team was tasked with creating a jungle oasis on top of acres of chaparral, and it pioneered an innovative water conservation system to keep the plants and animals well hydrated.
